The olive harvest season is one of the greatest celebrations of Cretan nature! From late autumn through mid-winter, old and new olive groves welcome farmers who gather with expertise and passion to harvest the precious olive fruit.

People of all ages come together in the fields, beneath the green olive trees, to pick olives while singing and sharing stories. Some prune, others pick or sort — there’s work for everyone.

When they grow tired, they rest under a large olive tree and lay out a simple feast. Pure products of the Cretan land — juicy tomatoes and crisp cucumbers, homemade cheeses, traditional pies, olives, and a sip of local wine — refresh them and give them energy to continue.

Later, men carry the sacks of olives to the olive press. There, a small miracle takes place: in just a few minutes, thanks to modern technology, olives yield their liquid gold — superb extra virgin olive oil. Its rich flavor, aroma, and health-giving properties awaken the senses the moment fresh olive oil touches the palate.

Meanwhile, women select the best olives to cure for the table — some in salt, some with vinegar — each recipe preserved in beautiful jars to accompany meals throughout the year.

In the evening, everyone gathers — men, women, and children — around the table for a hearty meal where olives and olive oil are the stars: freshly cut salads generously topped with olive oil, dishes cooked with olive oil, olives with homemade bread. This feast crowns the harvest, before the next morning finds everyone back among the olive trees.

Join a lively cooking class where we prepare classic Cretan dishes that celebrate olive oil — from handmade pies to garden-fresh salads — then enjoy a long table feast paired with local wines.

Discover the secrets of premium olive oil: how to taste it, what aromas and flavors to look for, and how to pair it with different foods.
